INS-CLAS Seminar Featuring Renowned Scholar Dr. Roberto Bouzas

Dear INS Graduate Students and Faculty:

I am writing you on behalf of the Center of Latin American Studies (CLAS) at the University of Miami.  CLAS will be co-sponsoring with INS a meeting with Dr. Roberto Bouzas, who is a renowned Argentine scholar.   In this informal meeting, Professor Bouzas will discuss his current research and different projects that are being developed at his university in Argentina.  This is an excellent opportunity, particularly for graduate students, to engage with a top Latin American scholar and learn about cutting-edge research in South America.

The meeting will be held at CLAS on Thursday, October 6th, 2011 from 6 to 7 p.m. Snacks and drinks will be provided.
Here is a brief biography of Dr. Bouzas:
Dr. Roberto Bouzas received degrees in Economics from the Universidad de Buenos Aires and Cambridge University.  A prolific author, he has written extensively on regional integration, the Argentine economy and economic policy, and international trade. Currently, Dr. Bouzas is a professor at the Universidad de San Andrés and a Senior Research Fellow at the National Scientific and Technical Research Board (CONICET).  He has been a visiting professor at the University of Notre Dame, Stanford, Duke University, Pontificia Universidade Católica de Río de Janeiro, and Universidade Federal de Río de Janeiro.

Miami-Dade County Mayoral Internship Program

Good Afternoon,

I wanted to take a moment to announce a very interesting internship opportunity Dr. Bagley has shared with me.  This opportunity is the Miami-Dade County Mayoral Internship Program.

Successful applicants to the Miami-Dade County Mayoral Internship Program will have the unique opportunity to work in the Office of Mayor Carlos A. Gimenez, who is working tirelessly to fulfill his primary pledges to residents to roll back the property tax rate, preserve essential public safety services and programs for seniors and children, and make County government smaller, more affordable, and more efficient.

The Miami-Dade County Mayoral Internship Program will allow graduate students, to experience County government in transition, as the Mayor has vowed to lead a more transparent and efficient administration in order to restore the good name of public service.  Interns will work directly with the Mayor’s staff as they work through the challenges of County government.

It is important to note that Miami-Dade County is a rather large enterprise.  In fact, Miami-Dade's government is the second largest governmental agency in the State of Florida, aside from the State of Florida itself.  With a proposed Fiscal Year 2011-12 budget of $6.114 billion and over 26,000 employees, the County’s government is larger than that of many states.

For those of you interested in this internship, I have provided below a link to the Web page for the internship program, as well as the application.

NOTE: Time is of the essence!  The deadline for applications to this program is rapidly approaching.

2011-2012 GSA Senators!

Dear Graduate Students in the Department of International Studies,

This academic year 2011-2012 we are pleased to represent the department in the Graduate Student Association (GSA). Please feel free to contact us with any concerns that you would like to bring to the attention of the general body of graduate study at the University of Miami. Senators meet approximately twice a month, and we are here to represent your voices on campus.

Beverly Barrett: b.barrett@umiami.edu
Dina Moulioulkova: dinamouliouk@yahoo.com

The GSA Senate is composed of approximately 30 students from across campus who represent their departments and colleges while working with the Executive Board of GSA to improve campus life for graduate students. The recent initial meeting of Senators discussed issues such as health insurance, research resources, volunteer activities, and parking on campus.

We wish you all the best for a successful academic year.

First Quiet Group Study Session at Richter!

Dear INS graduate students,

As was discussed at the orientation on 8/26/2011, the INS GSA would like to arrange quiet study sessions in a reserved room at Richter Library. We will provide free Starbucks coffee. See below for time and location.

The concept: As graduate students, we spend a lot of time alone. These sessions are intended to allow us to be just as productive as when we are alone, but in the presence of other warm bodies. This is an academic (rather than a social) event; continued sponsorship by the INS GSA is contingent on degree of participation and productivity. In order to create and maintain a distraction-free environment, we ask you to please respect the guidelines below.

INS graduate study session "etiquette":

1. Abstain from any conversation (no matter how brief) inside the study room. If you need to communicate with someone else inside the room, quietly signal for them to follow you outside.
2. If you are being distracted, you are entitled to politely ask anyone to be quiet or take their conversation outside.

3. Clean up after yourselves.
4. The last to leave should throw away the empty coffee containers, napkins, etc. and make sure the room is clean. INS GSA officers make the reservations using their personal library accounts.
5. Rooms seat 4-6 people. If you see that it's full, pass by again later and see if a space has opened up.

Where and When:

Date: Sept. 9, 2011

Time: 9:30am - 12:30pm (We have the room for three hours, the longest period of time allowed in the library's reservations system.)

Room 206 (seats 6)

Please let us know how it went after the session.  You can forward your comments and concerns to Patrick (p.thompson3@umiami.edu) or Menaka (mmahajan@umiami.edu).

Thanks, we hope to see you there!

A Call for Papers

2012 Annual Meeting Western Political Science Association

Portland, Oregon

March 22-24

Panel: The Biopolitical Aesthetic

Drawing inspiration from Fredrick Jameson’s work the Geopolitical Aesthetic (1992), we invite papers that investigate the aesthetic practices of the biopolitical age.  Jameson’s work suggested that cinema, in particular, offered access to a geopolitical unconscious.   Drawing from Foucault and Deleuze’s work on the biopolitical and geopolitical dispotif, this panel will seek to problematize that insight.  The central aim of the panel, therefore, is to investigate the specifics of the biopolitical aesthetic.  What does biopolitics look like?  How, in other words, are the forms and modalities of rule transformed to meet biopolitical demands to make life live.   Is there an aesthetic measure between “life” and “life that lives more?”  The panel also seeks to differentiate the geopolitical from the biopolitical aesthetic and understand the ways in which they comingle.  Has this differentiation/transformation occurred in/through mediums of art?   Has cinema changed to meet this demand?  Does digital art offer a new horizon of resistance?   Have aesthetic practices intensified into new domains of biopolitical governance of development, policing and governance, reflecting a changed aesthetic?  Finally, does a biopolitical distribution of the sensible demand new modes of resistance?

Abstracts of 200 words or less should be submitted to Julian Reid (julian.reid@ulapland.fi) and Geoffrey Whitehall (g.whitehall@acadiau.ca) by September 13, 2011.

International Political Sociology Graduate Student Paper Award (2012)

The International Political Sociology Section (IPS) of the International Studies Association will institute a yearly award for “best graduate student paper” in the field of international political sociology. The award will be presented at the section’s business meeting at the International Studies Association Annual Convention. The winner will receive a prize of US$150 and a certificate.

The award recognizes a graduate student paper that stands out by its excellence, rigour and originality. The winner of the award will be selected for its contribution to international political sociology, whether in the form of theoretical development, empirical analysis, or both.

Eligible paper can be either single or multi-authored by graduate students only and must have been presented at the ISA annual convention preceding the year of the delivery of the award.

Nominations, with an electronic copy of the paper send to the Chair of the Selection Committee, normally come from faculty supervisors and mentors as well as panel chairs and discussants at the ISA annual convention preceding the year of the delivery of the award. Nominations should be accompanied by a paragraph long justification including the student's name, academic institution, complete contact information, including telephone and e-mail address.

The papers must be received by email by 1 October of the year preceding the convention, and the email should identify the submission with the subject line "IPS Student Paper Award Submission."

The Selection Committee shall be chaired by the IPS Section Chair, who will select one additional external member of the Selection Committee. Two members of the Executive Committee of the IPS Section whose tenure started the year before the prize is delivered will also serve on the Selection Committee. In the event that either of these members are unable to serve on the Committee, they shall be replaced at the discretion of the Chair.

The External Selection Committee member will serve for two years. The Chair of the Committee and the two members of the Executive Committee part of the Selection Committee will serve for one year.

Papers written by, or contributed to, Selection Committee members are ineligible for the award.

The Chair is responsible for coordinating the deliberations of the committee, keeping records of the deliberations, and awarding the prize at the International Studies Association Meeting.

The Selection Committee should feel free to recommend that no award should be made in a given year. If at all possible, the Selection Committee should choose the winning submission and notable papers by consensus. If the Selection committee is unable to reach a consensus, a majority vote will determine the winning submission and notable papers.

The Chair of the Selection Committee must forward to the Executive Committee a recommendation for the Graduate Student Prize Winner, as well as up to two notable papers, including a 100 words citation for each paper, at least a month before the ISA annual meeting when the prize winner will be announced. These results will be published on the International Political Sociology Section website.
